A Letter For Parents
July 2, 2008
Dear Class of 2012 Parents:
On behalf of our faculty, staff, students and alumni, welcome to The University of Alabama family and to your student’s exciting freshman year of college. We want the next four years to be a wonderful time of positive growth intellectually, spiritually and socially for your son or daughter.
As your student leaves home for college for the first time, we know you have many concerns. We offer numerous programs and services to aid students in their transition to college. One of our newest efforts is through AlcoholEdu for College, a Web-based alcohol prevention program that has been recognized nationally for its effectiveness. The program uses the latest prevention techniques and science-based research to educate students about the impact of alcohol.
Whether or not your student drinks alcohol, the program empowers your son or daughter to make well-informed decisions about alcohol and is presented to help him/her better cope with the drinking behavior of others. The program has been helpful to many college students seeking ways to balance their new freedom living away from home with their need to establish a healthy lifestyle as young adults.
Every incoming freshman is required to take AlcoholEdu for College. We will communicate directly with your student regarding the information and instructions to complete this course. To help ensure that your student meets this requirement, please remind your son or daughter that all students must complete Part 1 of the course by August 11, 2008. The start date for the course is July 21, 2008.
We know parents are the first line of defense against alcohol misuse. That’s why we are making the student course available for interested parents. If you choose to review the course, please note that it is not necessary for you to respond to questions. It may be helpful to you, however, to see the types of questions your student will consider as part of the program. You may obtain a parent log-in number from the Web page http://alcoholedu.ua.edu beginning July 21, 2008.
While a 3-hour educational program doesn’t guarantee an alcohol safe environment, AlcoholEdu has proven to be helpful in educating over one million students about the impact of alcohol on the mind and body. It is our hope that the program will make a difference in our students’ lives. If the program helps just one student make a good decision about alcohol and personal safety, then we will have been successful. Thank you in advance for encouraging your students’ prompt completion of the course.
Sincerely,
